A very decorative pair of rectangular plaster bas relief plaques after Samuel Henning (D.1832). Beautifully framed by John Leech Gallery with brown velvet borders and a gilt wood border. Some minor pitting visible that is a result of the casting process.
CAVALCADE PROCEEDING TO THE TOURNAMENT
The scene is in low relief, depicting knights on horse back proceeding to the jousting arena. Set within a border finely decorated with a geometric and leaf pattern, a quatrefoil at each corner and the head of Walter ‘Scott’ and Ivanhoe depicted on a central shield.
THE CANTERBURY PILGRIMAGE The scene is in low relief, showing Canterbury pilgrims and figures on horseback at various angles, one with a sackbutt, one with a bow etc. Set within a border finely decorated with an undulating vine pattern, a quatrefoil at each corner and ‘Chaucer’ on a central shield. Samuel Henning was the son of John Henning (1771-1851), who worked on the Elgin Marbles.
The age of these plaques are unknown, but I believe these to be antique copies from the original copper plates due to the crispness of the casting and age related wear.
