📍"Tsarskoye Selo State Museum and Heritage Site, Saint Petersburg, Russia… meaning “Tsar’s Village,” a park and palace complex once home to the Russian imperial family comprising multiple significant architectural palaces and gardens including Catherine Palace and Alexander Palace…
The complex, according to historian Robert K. Massie, an American journalist and Pulitzer Prize winner who focused on the Romanovs, Tsarskoye Selo “was a magnificent symbol, a supreme gesture, of Russian autocracy… Inside the park, monuments, obelisks, and triumphal arches studded 800 acres of velvet green lawn. An artificial lake, big enough for small sailboats, could be emptied and filled like a bathtub… The two palaces stood 500 yards apart in the Imperial Park… Outside the palace gates, Tsarskoye Selo, was an elegant provencial town [which] included mansions of the aristocracy lining the wide tree-shaded boulevard…”
