Dark stained beechwood (to look like mahogany) with canework seat and backrest. Great condition with some wear consistent with age.
This distinctive THONET bentwood armchair (pronounced モTone-eTヤ) was revolutionary in concept when it was first pioneered by Michel THONET, German (1796 ヨ 1871) who invented the bentwood process of bending steamed wood into light but strong curvaceous and desirable shapes. At furniture fashion at the time was for heavy and ornately carved designs and so the ability to produce durable but light, comfortable and stylish furniture which could be mass produced was a revolutionary concept. The wood was soaked, steamed, moulded and then bent into circular and flowing forms for the arms, legs and stretchers of the furniture.
