This exquisite vintage French terrine showcases a trompe-l’œil design, featuring a partridge with a handle shaped like the partridges head. The unique design mimics a pâté encased in a golden-brown crust, with the type of fowl—or in this case, partridge—hinted at by the intricate detailing of the partridges distinctive feathers and red bill. A terrine is a French meat loaf akin to pâté but with coarsely chopped ingredients, served cold or at room temperature. This piece, however, cleverly substitutes pastry with hand painted porcelain, designed to emulate a traditional pie or tart, a nod to eighteenth-century French culinary innovation during times of flour shortages. Pillivuyt, established in 1823 in Mehun-sur-Yèvre, is renowned for its fine porcelain creations, particularly those made for serving game. The company, founded by Louis Charles Pillivuyt in Bourges, is celebrated for its high-quality roasting dishes and has earned accolades at five Universal Exhibitions: Paris (1855, 1867, 1878, 1889) and London (1862). This terrine embodies the elegance and craftsmanship of French porcelain artistry, designed to transition seamlessly from oven to table.
