A fringed woollen Paisley Flemish wrap blanket from the 1930s, in pristine condition as it was preserved in its original packaging and unused. This throw would be perfect for adding a touch of elegance and character to a sofa or bed.
Paisley shawls/blankets first appeared in Europe in the early 19th century. Originating in Kashmir, Northern India, they reached Europe through French soldiers who brought back Turkish shawls as souvenirs from their campaigns in Egypt. However, these Turkish shawls were imitations of the authentic Kashmir designs. The distinctive “paisley” pattern, also known as the “pine” pattern, emerged around 1820 when genuine Kashmir shawls began arriving in England. The technique for mass-producing these shawls was developed in Paisley, Scotland, which became a major production hub, giving the shawl its name. In 1842, Queen Victoria ordered 17 shawls from Paisley, including one for the christening of her son, Prince Edward, which solidified the paisley shawl’s status as a fashion essential. By 1870, however, the paisley shawl had fallen out of favour, and production dwindled. In recent years, paisley print has experienced a resurgence in popularity. Fashion designers and brands are incorporating this classic pattern into their collections, from luxurious scarves to chic dresses and home accessories.
