A well-executed oil on board portrait of a Cardinal. The painting is in its original gilded frame, and is signed in the bottom left hand corner ‘Gertrude A. Steel (Woods)’. Gertrude Steel was born in London in 1879, and studied art at Lambeth in the early 1900s.
Background. Above the bishops were the archbishops, who oversaw the workings of several dioceses combined together to be called an archdiocese. Next were the cardinals, senior bishops who held the power to elect the highest member of the Church, the Pope himself.
