Antique brass eagle portable watch-holder on a footed base with accompanying earlier Zentra (German) pocket watch (decorative only and not in working order). The watch-holder lived barely a century and had its moment of glory in the second half of the nineteenth century. Its purpose was to hang the pocket watch for men or the watch pendant for women when the day had ended. There were those created for the office, for the bedroom or for the fireplace. Their function was to make it easy to read the time and so not to put their watch on the marble fireplace or the night table. Some models have a receptacle or a saucer that was used to put, at bedtime, cufflinks, necklaces, chain or pins, brooches and other objects of adornment. The watch holder disappeared with the appearance of the wristwatch during the 1914-1918 war.
