$250.00
A highly collectible and rare transferware plate in the “Hanibal” pattern depicting the famous scene of Hannibal crossing the Alps with horses and elephants. Made in Holland by Maestricht Societe Ceramique. The factory was established in Maestricht in the Netherlands by Guilaume Lambert & Cie in 1859. The plate is in good antique condition with some wear and crazing to be expected from an antique plate from the late 1800’s.
Hannibal’s crossing of the Alps in 218 BC was one of the major events of the Second Punic War, and one of the most celebrated achievements of any military force in ancient warfare.[2] Hannibal managed to lead his Carthaginian army over the Alps and into Italy to take the war directly to the Roman Republic, bypassing Roman and allied land garrisons and Roman naval dominance.
