Massie, an American journalist and Pulitzer Prize winner who focused on the Romanovs, Tsarskoye Selo âwas a magnificent symbol, a supreme gesture, of Russian autocracy⌠Inside the park, monuments, obelisks, and triumphal arches studded 800 acres of velvet green lawn. An artificial lake, big enough for small sailboats, could be emptied and filled like a bathtub⌠The two palaces stood 500 yards apart in the Imperial Park⌠Outside the palace gates, Tsarskoye Selo, was an elegant provencial town [which] included mansions of the aristocracy lining the wide tree-shaded boulevardâŚââ
