Background: Baccarat is a French glass manufacturer known for their chandeliers, glasses, and perfume bottles. The company was created in 1764 when King Louis XV responded to requests from wealthy landowners, who wanted to capitalize on the resources of the Baccarat region. In the early years, production was limited to window panes, mirrors, and stemware. The company quickly developed an international reputation, importing materials from around the world and focusing on technological innovations in design. In 1823, Baccarat received its first royal commission, and soon became a favourite among the European elite, in particular, the Russian aristocracy. In addition to the popularity of their chandeliers and tableware, the Russian court ordered stemware, with demand becoming so high that, at one point, one-third of the company’s workforce was dedicated to fulfilling orders from Russia. After the defeat of Napoleon III, Baccarat began producing work influenced Japanese designs, while also expanding its presence in Asia. Between the latter half of the 19th century into the 20th century, the company’s biggest product was perfume bottles.
