A wonderful antique Russian bronze door knocker, in the traditional elegant shape of a lady’s hand with rings on her fingers. A religious icon is impressed onto the back of the hand. The hand knocker has a great patina with verdigris to the lower fingers.(The strike plate ball is missing).Thought to originate from the Hand of Fatima—a palm-shaped amulet used to protect against evil—hand-shaped knockers are common in countries bordering the Mediterranean whence they spread to neighbouring countries.Occupants of a house with a door knocker in this hand shape were protected against evil.
Also, a lovely antique brass door knocker in the shape of a female hand known as the ‘Hand of Fatima’ c.1890 with a ring on her marriage finger. The item in the hand’s palm is not a ball but a pomegranate, which in Spanish is the “granada.” There is good casting detail showing her fabric sleeve . These door knockers make a wonderful design accent on your front door. The striker plate which is missing is easy to source.
