In the heart of Sanssouci Park lies a gem of royal architecture and art history: the Picture Gallery. Built between 1755 and 1764, it was originally an orangery, later repurposed by Frederick the Great to house his art collection. Designed by Johann Gottfried Büring and refined by Jan Bouman, its Rococo elegance reflects the king’s refined taste.⁠
⁠
Frederick II envisioned a space to both display and enjoy his collection. The gallery’s ornate interiors, with gilded stucco, vaulted ceilings, and marble floors, exude grandeur. Large arched windows bathe the hall in natural light, enhancing the vibrancy of the paintings.⁠
⁠
The collection includes works by Rubens, whose dynamic compositions captivate; Caravaggio, master of dramatic light; and Van Dyck, known for his elegant portraits. These masterpieces offer insight into the artistic preferences of the Prussian court.⁠
⁠
The gallery is a testament to 18th-century craftsmanship. Its harmonious proportions and intricate ornamentation define the Rococo style, creating an inviting atmosphere for contemplation.⁠

Remarkably, the Picture Gallery survived World War II unscathed, preserving its invaluable collection. While much of Europe’s heritage suffered destruction, this royal sanctuary remains a beacon of resilience.⁠

"N E T H E R Lypiatt is a perfectly formed neo-classical Grade I-Listed Manor House once owned by Prince and Princess Michael of Kent.⁠

Built in the early 1700s by an unknown architect for Judge Charles Coxe, with one wing added in 1931 by Morley Horder, the house forms a perfect square of 46 feet (14 m) on each side, with sash windows, tall chimneys, hipped roofs and gate piers and railings.⁠
⁠
The attic storey with dormers was removed in 1844, but replaced by Horder c. 1923. It has been praised by architectural historian Mark Girouard as perfectly exemplifying the early eighteenth-century formal house in miniature. The house has four reception rooms, eight bedrooms, and four bathrooms.⁠

It comprises four floors, including a tall basement and an attic floor. Inside, much of the early eighteenth-century panelling survives, as do original stone fireplaces. A fine staircase runs from basement to attic" via @corsicollection⁠

"The majesty of L I G H T....⁠

This is Ca’ Rezzonico, an Italian Rococo palace fronting Venice’s Grand Canal. It began its life in the mid-1600s when two earlier palazzos were attempted to be combined; this was not possible and in 1750 one of the palazzos, unfinished, was offered to the Rezzonico family, a Lombardy clan made rich via banking and the fabric trade who purchased a title of Venetian nobility in 1648 following a war with Turkey when Venetian state coffers were depleted. The palazzo’s construction continued under the famous architect Giorgio Massari who largely kept true to original plans but did, however, make some tweaks to suit the prevailing Rococo tastes of the day.⁠
⁠
The Rezzonico family enjoyed fame and fortune of the highest degree; one member become Pope Clement II and another completed a strategic marriage unifying two of the most powerful Venetian families at the time. This all ended in 1810 when the family line died out, and thus after a string of owners and renting, the city of Venice purchased the property in 1936. The building is now a museum dedicated to 18th century Venetian art"⁠
