This has to be one of the best mirrors I have soured to date. It is a stunning late 19th century French Louis XV style gilded mirror c.1870 with a Rococo shell motif cartouche surrounded by foliate detailing. Fully restored, the frame has a very rare basket weave detail to the gesso frame which makes this mirror even more special. I have never seen one like it. The basket weave pattern would have been carved out of wood and then used as a mould. The original mirror glass has some age to it with some small spotting to the lower portion. The bottom plinth is decorated with foliate motif corbels which are also echoed in the frame midway. Rococo takes its name from the French word ‘rocaille’, which means rock or broken shell – natural motifs that often formed part of the designs, along with fish and other marine decorations. The mirror comes with a bespoke wooden hanging bar system used to hang the mirror on to a wall.
