A French 19th century terrestrial globe with a printed papier-mâché sphere supported on a cast iron tripod base ending with claw feet. The ornate cast iron base contains figural male faces with elegant moustaches and also the letters LB. Lebegue was one of the leading globe-publishers of the late 1800s. The company produced a wide range of models and published in several languages.
Globe Terrestre – A.N Lebegue & Cie
30 Rue de Lille, Paris c.1890
Present on this globe is the Congo State which was established in 1885.
Not present on the globe is Rhodesia, this happened in 1895.
So this globe can most likely be dated as c.1885-1895
More likely 1885, as this is the year that Jules Lebegue took over from his father Alfonso Nicolas Lebegue.
It could well be one of the last globes made by Alfonso (cartouche showing A.N Lebegue).
The globe has wear commensurate with age and also has damage to the southern west part of Africa (as pictured)
